I am an HIV/AIDS counsellor certified by the National AIDS Centre (an agenda of the Minister of Health in Poland). As a counsellor, I am authorised to provide counselling for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), to carry out tests, as well as to provide support to people living with HIV at every stage of infection.
For every counsellor, but also for every patient, the moment of a positive diagnosis of infection is an important moment, as it requires a great deal of trust on both sides, the ability to communicate important information and, on the patient's side, the ability to listen with understanding.
HIV infection is no longer as big a challenge for medicine today as it was in the 1990s, we are a long way from the times of Freddie Mercury, Liberace, Rock Hudson or, in Poland, the well-known dancer of the time, Gerard Wilk. Today, we have at our disposal not only excellent methods of early HIV diagnosis but also effective medicines thanks to which the patient quickly achieves undetectable viral load and returns to normal functioning in society, including having sex. The only change to previous life is the need for ongoing treatment, which usually consists of taking one tablet of the drug per day and regular visits to the infectious disease doctor to check laboratory results.
